It can be frustrating to try a new recipe and not understand how much of an ingredient to purchase at the store. Sometimes they give you a quantity of grapes in volume (2 cups) and sometimes as a weight (6 ounces). Are they seedless or seeded grapes? How many grapes in a pound? In order to help make cooking easier we did some experiments to help tell you exactly how many grapes you need to buy.
To answer How many grapes in a cup we went to the local market to check out the fruit section. After surveying the options we found that grocery stores usually sell their grapes still on the stem. However the stems really vary in size, quantity and thickness, making measurements difficult to hone in. Since grapes are normally taken off of the stem and then used whole or cut in half, we selected 1 pound of seedless grapes with the stems removed for our how many grapes in a cup testing samples.
Seedless grapes weigh less on average than similar-sized grapes that contain seeds. When we checked it out, our 1 pound of seedless grapes contained about 2.5 cups where 1 pound of seeded grapes only yielded 2 cups. In addition, the actual weight of that quantity of grapes varies based upon the specific kind of grape and ripeness. However, you can find red, purple or green seedless grapes with about the same size diameter.
Our 1 pound sample contained 80 seedless grapes which measured about 2.5 cups. We discovered that 1 cup weighed 5.76 to 6.4 ounces and held about 32 grapes. After weighing many of our sample grapes, we concluded that 1 grape came in between .18 to .2 ounces.
